Crafty exploits at The Clothes Show

When we're not busy juggling about a zillion crafty projects, or being busy bees adding new projects to The Making Spot, Lyndsey and me do enjoy getting the chance to get out and about and meet like-minded-crafty-types.  So we had a great time at last week's Clothes Show Live show.

Stitching the days away with Mr X Stitch & Miso Funky

Lyndsey and me were there to help out on the Mollie Makes stand, where we offered passing shoppers a little slice of handmade haven - aka crafty chats and workshops! We had a great time hanging out with some of our favourite designers, and lending a hand at various stitchy workshops! Here's a few of our best bits...Two of our favourite stitchers - Mr X Stitch (1) and Miso Funky (2)  hosted cross stitching workshops at the show, along with Emily Peacock.

Make a crafty iPad cover

If you have an iPad or tablet on your Christmas list then these crafty cases are a must have!

The more we speak to people the more it seems that craft and techie geekdom go hand in hand. With so many gorgeous and inspiring blogs out there to peruse it's no wonder really.

I love my iPad and there's nothing better than sliding through the pages of a brightly lit craft mag such as Mollie Makes or Simply Knitting.

Do you prefer digi versions of mags or do your prefer having a print copy to read in the bath and have a good ol sniff of? We spied this lovely felty ferocious wolf felt cover from Boutique ID which we just had to share. Perfect for keeping your pride and joy nice and safe.

A knitted cover *slaps forehead* of course. Courtesy of GnomeAcres we think this is the perfect disguise. What robber would ever expect such techdom behind a wooly knit.

Interview: Carol Meldrum & Knitlympics

When Carol Medrum created Einstein and Marlilyn Monroe in her last book Knitted Icons we thought we'd seen it all. But how wrong we were. In her newly published book Knitlypics Carol shares patterns for 20 Olympic icons including Zola Budd, Usain Bolt and Steve Redgrave!

Not only that you can knit your very own ticket, the Olympic torch and the iconic rings!

We caught up with The Making Spot designer to find out what inspired her...

Knitlympics, how did that come about? Are you a big sports fan?

The idea for Knitlympics came from the publisher – Anova Books. As I’d worked with them on Knitted Icons and both books are doll based, it seemed like a natural progression.  It was a great opportunity to develop the basic doll pattern, adding hands and feet for one thing and making both a male and female doll was important.  I am a bit of a sports fan - I really enjoy watching the Olympics and am looking forward to seeing what kind of show London 2012 will put on next year.

When did you first learn to knit?

I think I learned to knit when I was about 4 or 5. I was taught by my mum and grandma at home, but was also taught at primary school. I used to love flicking through my mum's old Vogue knitting books and experimenting with the different stitches. I remember staying overnight with my grandma and knitting a stripy Doctor Who scarf for my doll. I was so excited to show my dad, but I hadn’t secured the ends where I’d changed colour, I decided to cut them off and funnily enough – it fell apart on the way home in the car! I was so upset, but it makes me giggle now to think about it.

Hello deer

Exciting post arrived in TMS headquarters this morning... in the shape of many deer-themed gifts! It's got me thinking... I really want to make these reindeer paper ornaments for my flat this year. After all, it wouldn't be Christmas without a little DIY decoration-making session...

Make your own paper reindeer - happy days!

Be cool, craft with burlap (or not)

I must just tell you about a hilarious blog post I discovered today on my usual saunter around the world wide web. Have you heard of burlap?

No, I wasn't sure what it was either until the powers of Google delivered me the goods.  It was one of those "ahhhhhh I know" moment. It's what us Brits call hessian.

Good burlap
