Flags ahoy! Cross stitch on waste canvas

Join in our Jubilee Street PartyThis week Jenny & I have been busy bees getting ready for this Saturday's Jubilee Street Party - a full day of free craft projects here on the blog. We have it on good authority that party-goers to our virtual event are offering all sorts of lovely freebies - including free knitting patterns, embroidery patterns & papercraft downloads!

Here's a sneak peak of one of the projects we'll be featuring... these sweet heart flags are part of a stitch a street party download from over on our main site - as seen in the May issue of Cross Stitcher magazine. My friend Holly kindly helped me stitch these up while I was making cupcake cases for a free tutorial (watch this space)! Read on to to find out how we got on with our first attempt at stitching on waste canvas!

I loved these tiny cupcake-topping flags as soon as I saw them, so thought this was the perfect time to try my hand at waste canvas...  so with Holly's help we gathered up the supplies (felt, thread, needle & waste canvas) - plus the chart (available as part of stitch a street party). You simply stitch hearts on to felt using waste canvas, then snip into shape to turn into flags!

How to stitch on to waste canvas

If you've never tried it before, try our tutorial, or find out how to cross stitch here. It was surprisingly easy - who knew? We simply pinned a small piece of waste canvas to some felt (you can do this with any fabric)... then cross stitched as you would with aida. Once you've finished you simply remove the pins, cut away the excess fabric from around the design, then pull out the threads one at a time! leaving your lovely cross stitching but no waste canvas in sight! I'm seriously hooked already and am going to start stitching hearts on to aprons, tea towels and bedding all over the house! Not so lucky for my husband, whos already constantly finding needles and sequins under foot everywhere he goes in our flat!

You can see this project in full this weekend as part of the party - don't forget to come and join us here on the blog this Saturday - we've got some ace party projects planned for you! And in the mean time, check out our fantabulous range of cross stitch patterns for more ideas what to stitch next! Zoe x
