Tutorial: loop knot starts

Loop knots are a simple way to start off a new cross stitch thread, and they're one of my favourite tips for tidy cross stitching. Try them today with our step-by-step guide.

Happy threads are tidy threads! Loop knot starts are a nifty way to give the back of your stitching a neater finish, free from loose thread ends. Try it tonight with this step-by-step guide - first featured in Cross Stitcher2011-03-thumbnail-loop-knots1.jpg magazine.

1. Fold your thread in half

Cut a single 70cm thread length and fold it in two to create a loop at one end. Now thread your needle with the two separate tail ends.

2. Loop the loop

Bring your needle up to the fabric’s surface from underneath, with the loop on the reverse. Make a half cross stitch, passing the needle through the loop.

3. Pull through & stitch away

Pull your needle and thread through the fabric to secure your loop on the reverse of the fabric, as shown here.
