Interview: Marna from Little a Designs

Marna Lunt is the talented designer behind www.littleadesigns.co.uk, a treasure trove of handstitched delights. We love Marna's colourful style and clever personalised designs, so we asked her a little about how she works, what inspires her, and what she's up to at the moment!

Marna, your online shop is a crafty treasure trove! What inspired you to set up Little a Designs?

Many of us find that life changes greatly after we have children and we have different goals and ideals. Luckily when you're an artist it often gives you a purpose and talent to use that works well around children and working from home.

I had been made redundant during my pregnancy with my first child Arthur. When he was born he suffered severe brain damage and so I was very limited to what job I'd be able to do around his very specialised and intense care needed. Then I found not only did I need to make money but I needed to have an outlet that would help body and soul and I knew that now was the time to grab the opportunity and do what I really loved at last and paint and create. And Little a was born.

Every morning I'm excited about the day to come and the opportunity to make and create. I am constantly inspired by my greatest loves; the landscapes and colours of my North Yorkshire Moors and my deep love of Italian Renaissance art. That may sound like an odd combination but they each excite me everyday.

Guest post: Try a craft class

Today we're welcoming a guest blogger - the wonderful Jade from lovemycourse, a UK website that helps you find courses, workshops and classes in your area.

A superhero equipped with knitting needles

Some people are just naturals when it comes to crafts. They’re the ones who never put their foot down too hard on the sewing machine pedal; who make knitting look as easy as brushing their teeth; and the ones you just know could copy the craft projects on Blue Peter as kids and end up with a Tracey Island which looked better than the real thing.

Then there are those of us who aren’t. We like making bits and pieces for fun, and get excited over new patterns, but things don’t always go to plan. Sure, we have our successes, but there are a fair few projects that end in us tossing aside our material in frustration and reaching for the nearest (and biggest) bar of chocolate. Unfortunately I am most definitely in this group...

Emily's favourite embellishments

Today we've got a guest post from Emily, our fab work experience student. Emily loves making cards, and has picked some of her favourite embellishments for quick crafting on a budget...

If you’re rushed for time and need some easy inspiration, why not try the girly Greeting Cards kit from The Works for just £1.49! The pack contains stick-on shoes, handbags and sweet birthday greetings.

Or if you're looking forward to summer sunshine, give your cards a beachy look or scrapbook last year's holiday memories with Jolee's Tropical Fish stickers. They’re available for £1.99 from Sunshine Scrapbooking.

Animals can make a beautiful addition to your card and scrapbook pages! This adorable Penny Black 'Seeing your face' stamp from The Glitter Pot costs £6.39, and it's really versatile for cards, gift tags and more. It’s easy to use and you can colour the daffodil bright yellow for a vibrant pop of colour.

Thanks, Emily! If you'd like to tell us about your favourite embellishments, leave a comment below, or share your thoughts on Twitter and Facebook.

Jumper for a giraffe!

Look at this amazing artwork that our friend Ant spotted last week!

Present (for a Giraffe) is a giant sweater knitted by Japanese artists Mai Yamashita and Naoto Kobayashi.

The sweater is designed for a four-metre-tall giraffe and took two months to make - we're so impressed!

Of course, no giraffe has ever worn it, but there's a brilliant scale model of a jumper-wearing giraffe over on the yamashita-kobayashi website. Check it out!
